What is your favorite trick to deal with stress?

Somebody sent me this image. It made me smile so I thought I'd share. (I run marathons)

When we are stressed, overwhelmed or frustrated, the executive center of our brain (the pre frontal cortex) gives up and the limbic part takes over.

The limbic system deals with our emotions, in particular those that relate to anger, fear and survival. That's why it creates the fight, flight or freeze response.

When that happens we are unable to make rational decisions.

So, what to do?

Fortunately, science tells us that the trick is to spend a few minutes throughout the day in activities that bring us peace and pleasure like praying or meditating, moving / stretching / dancing, yawning slowly several times, playing and – would you have guessed – laughing!

So I encourage you to set your phone to ding every hour so you can take a short break to reset the executive center in your brain. Do those activities for about a minute, and be the observer without judgment.
